According to the program notes, this cycle "brings us through the history of beauty in Chinese arts, from ancient totems to figurines, from poetry to calligraphy, from dance to music, from thoughts to the spirit. It is deep in expression and rich in color, lyrical yet dramatic. " Commissioned by Chanticleer and the Shanghai Quartet for the celebration of their 30th and 25th anniversaries, the complete work was premiered on March 13, 2008 in San Francisco.
