Luminare composed by Hope Lee. 1953-. For ensemble. Flute, Oboe, Viola, Cello, Contrabass, Harp, Piano, 2 Percussionists. Bigger Scorings. Ensemble. Work premiere. 1985 Ars Omina, Toronto. Chamber Music. Advanced. Full score. Composed 1984-85. Duration 10'. Published by Furore Verlag. FV.FUE-2300. ISBN M-50012-130-5. Chamber Music. Luminare is inspired by "Cold Mountain," the name of a place, also the name of a person about whom very little is known although he is believed to have lived during the Tang Dynasty. Leaving his worldly belongings, he wandered into the wilderness and used the name of the mountain as his pseudonym and symbol of his spiritual aspirations. No one could trace where he disappeared to, but one found written on tree trunks and temple walls an abundant number of poems in which he wrote tenderly about nature. "This character has always fascina-ted me. often I've wondered how much courage one needs to break away from worldly ties as he did. During a stay in the country one winter, the freedom and peacefulness of the quiet solitude brought me close to the spirit of Cold Mountain - or rather, the Cold Mountain hiding within. Hope Lee. Luminare was commissioned by ARS OMNIA with the assistance of a Canada Council Grant.
