EDITOR'S NOTE

The Italian town of Lucca was the birthplace of one of opera's most famouscomposers, Giacomo Puccini. However, this creator of Madame Butterfly andTosca wasin fact the fifth generation of composers in the Puccini family. This musical family treeincluded Giacomo Puccini senior (greatgreatgrandfather of the opera composer),Antonio Puccini (greatgrandfather), Domenico Puccini (grandfather) and MichelePuccini (father). Each of these composers was concerned primarily with creating sacredworks for religious worship in Lucca.

Giacomo Puccini senior (1712-1781) lived his entire life in Lucca. His earlymusical studies were with Caret ti of Bologna. He served as organist at the church ofSan Martino as well as director of the Cappella Palatina. In 1743, Puccini became amember of the Bologna Accademia Filarmonica. His sacred works alternatecounterpoint with homophonic texture, and demonstrate striking harmonic changes toillustrate the text.

2. Dixit Dominus (Ps.110) -The Lord said to my Lord, sit at my right hand untilI make your enemies into your footstool. The Lord will send the rod of your power forthfrom Zion. Rule in the middle of your enemies. The power is your's on the day of yourstrength, in the splendour of the holy ones. I have given birth to you from the wombbefore the coming of the light. The Lord has sworn and will not take it back. You are apriest for eternity , according to the order of Melchisedech. The Lord at your right handdestroys kings on the day of his anger. He will judge the nations, will pile up ruins andscatter heads on many lands. He will drink from the torrent in his way, he will lift uphis head.
