The Ritournelle for Violoncello and Piano comes from Kapralova's Deux ritournelles pour violoncelle et piano, Op. 25. Both pieces in this set were composed in Paris and completed probably on 11 May 1940; the autograph of the cello part of one of them is dated 'Paris, Mai 1940'. However, only one of the two ritournelles has survived, thanks to the care of pianist Hermann Grab who took it with him to the USA when he fled France. The pieces were to be premiered in Paris on 29 May 1940, but in view of the rapidly worsening political situation that concert was cancelled. Thus the first performance took place in London, in the same year. This ritournelle is being published with kind support from The Kapralova Society.
